The correlation between turmeric and Alzheimer’s

Modern medical research has found a strong correlation between Alzheimer’s disease and the intake of turmeric. Turmeric – a spice from the ginger family that is yellow in color is domestically grown in the Indian subcontinent. The use of turmeric in India dates back to ancient times, in fact turmeric is a spice that is part of almost any Indian food recipe. Apart from food, turmeric has various other uses, it is known the world over for its anti bacterial, anti inflammatory, antitumor antispasmodic, anti allergic properties and hence is used in medicines, cosmetics etc. In the science of Ayurveda Turmeric is a herb that is extremely beneficial in treating various diseases – let us now understand how turmeric can be beneficial in treating Alzheimer’s.
The correlation or link up is attributed to the presence of the antioxidant curcumin – an active ingredient in turmeric known for its anti inflammatory effect. Curcumin that is found in turmeric has radical scavenging properties thereby preventing damage that can be caused to the cells of our body by free radicals. And it is this oxidant damage that is substantially responsible in the development of AD or Alzheimer’s disease. In an experiment conducted on mice, it was proved that the development and growth of amyloid plaques were substantially reduced with the ingestion of turmeric.
Amyloid plaques in the brain of these mice caused inflammation and impairment to the cells in the brain. Amyloid plaques or the accumulation of protein elements is linked to the accumulation of free radicals that in turn damage cells of the nerves. Alzheimer’s alleviation could be based upon this ability of curcumin in turmeric to combat the development of plaque. Incidentally Alzheimer’s disease in adults in their sixties and seventies in India is far less when compared to adults of the same age in the US.
